Sensei Rusty McMains

For over 30 years, Sensei Rusty McMains has been bringing to Texas the very best in Martial arts instruction. He is the director and chief instructor of the OKINAWAN KARATE CENTER.

Sensei McMains was born on September 4, 1958, in Galveston, Texas. He holds black belts in Okinawan Goju-Ryu, Okinawan Kempo, Chun Do Kwan and Jujutsu, with extensive training in Okinawan Kubudo, Modern Arnis, Hapkido, Tai Chi and Boxing.

He is a former self-defense and physical fitness training instructor for the Texas Department of Corrections and the College of the Mainland's Criminal Justice Department Cadet Training Program.

He began his martial arts training in April 1974 at the age of 15. At that time, competition was very much a part of his martial arts training and Sensei McMains succeeded in this area as well. He continually placed in tournament competitions in Texas, Louisiana and Mexico. He was the #1 Brown Belt Men's Competitor in Texas for 2 consecutive years. His successful tournament and full-contact competitions have won him literally hundreds of trophies and awards including local, state, regional and national rankings from 1978-1994.

In the early 1980's, he began studying classical Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese martial arts in an attempt to find what his previous instructors and training were lacking. Sensei McMains exposed himself to and trained in several martial arts in his search for the best the martial arts world had to offer.

He began training in Okinawan Goju-Ryu under Sensei Ramon Veras. In 1995 he was personally reviewed and promoted to NiDan by Master Morio Higaonna. In 1997, Sensei McMains was promoted to SanDan by Sensei Veras and received his certificate from the Jundokan Hombu Dojo in Okinawa, Japan.

He is himself a full-time student of the martial arts and regularly attends classes and various training workshops, not only in Karate but in other arts as well.

Sensei McMains has the distinctive honor and opportunity of training under some of the world's leading martial artists. With this priviledge comes the great responsibility of maintaining a very high level of knowledge and expertise. The "black belt" is part of a process not the end result.

Because of his in-depth knowledge and understanding of various martial arts and his level of expertise, he travels throughout the US and Canada conducting seminars on all aspects of the martial arts. Presently Sensei McMains oversees the continued instruction of the Northwest Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate School in Welland, Ontario, Canada, headed by Sensei Doug Meagher. Sensei McMains travels to Canada 3-4 times a year to offer instruction in both Goju-Ryu and Kyusho-jutsu.

Sensei McMains is a featured instructor on several internationally distributed martial arts training videos, has co-authored a book and had several articles published in martial arts magazines.
